MMAyou.com got to catch-up with the legendary “Mr. Low Kick” Rob Kaman. Check out what this 9 X kickboxing and Muay Thai champion has to say about Anderson Silva’s Muay Thai skills, who he might be training soon, why he considers Dana White to be full of it, and much more!
MMAyou.com: First, how are you doing?
Kaman: Very good.
MMAyou.com: What’s new with you?
Kaman: Looking for space here in Miami to start a gym or partner up with Nogueira. They’re asking me to become the standup teacher at his gym.
MMAyou.com: Are you teaching already right now at his gym?
Kaman: No no no. Not yet.
MMAyou.com: Are you helping Heath get ready for Brock Lesnar?
Kaman: I don’t know. He has a boxing coach that also trained BJ and he thinks he doesn’t need me for this fight.
MMAyou.com: I have two words for that; big mistake! (both start laughing). Have you gotten to train with Anderson at all?
Kaman: No no no no.
MMAyou.com: How would you rate his Muay Thai skills?
Kaman: He’s a great Muay Thai fighter. He handles the in and out fighting (inaudible) in the UFC fights. Just Thai boxing fights is a different thing.
Just Thai Boxing is a different situation but in MMA, in a UFC fight, he is a great Thai Boxer.
MMAyou.com: Are you still training Brandon Vera?
Kaman: No. I didn’t see his last fight and I don’t train with him anymore.
MMAyou.com: Are you training anyone new?
Kaman: No, at the moment I just took a holiday in Miami. I wanted to see if I wanted to be here or… Just chilling and I was waiting for the fight from Heath and he thinks that… I’m still waiting because he might need me for a couple of weeks but it’s okay. It doesn’t matter (laughs)
MMAyou.com: How do you like Los Angeles as opposed to Miami?
Kaman: I like Miami better. It’s more alive.
MMAyou.com: I read online that you said “Dana White is bullshit“. Can you elaborate on that?
Kaman: What I meant was that he brags about on the TV and with his Ferrari and the whole thing that the UFC is worth two billion dollars. But why doesn’t he start with paying the fighters better, you understand? Then all the crap that he does (inaudible).
You understand me? It’s the fighters that make the show! And not Mr. Dana White, you understand? And then he shows off and he’s pimping around with his Ferraris and his two million dollar.. He’s got to also pay the fighters better. If you keep it in balance then you can do this kind of shit, you understand? For me it’s like pimps and hos. And that’s the thing that I mean that he’s full of bullshit. If you go around and you brag about the UFC that it’s worth two billion dollars and you drive around in your Ferraris then don’t let Sean Sherk or whatever champ you get away with a fighter for $35,000 or $45,000. Because then you’re a pimp in my eyes, don’t talk to me.
MMAyou.com: I believe Keith Jardine made $10,000 for being part of the co-main event when he fought recently.
Kaman: It’s bullshit. That’s what I meant . He’s full of shit.
MMAyou.com: Who would you say right now is the best striker in Mixed Martial Arts?
Kaman: BJ’s a good striker. What’s his name? George St. Pierre I like. Anderson Silva is a perfect striker. There’s a couple others but just striker doesn’t say at a lot. You have to be able to combine a couple of things.
MMAyou.com: Why would you say it is that so many MMA fighters are so bad as far as the Thai clinch goes?
Kaman: Yeah because they always… They want to go to the ground and they want to go outside, they don’t want to go inside. With wrestling and mostly Jiu Jitsu everything’s outside and with the Thai clinch you go for the inside and use your strength and your elbows to the inside, and use somebody else’s power in a way. The other way is around, they go from the outside. Thai Boxing’s more from the inside, the moment that you have your hands inside and you have tight around your neck.
MMAyou.com: Do you think as the skill set of MMA gets better do you think people will get better at that?
Kaman: Yeah but they have to focus on that and they have to start training it and acknowledge it. You see how Anderson uses it? There’s almost nobody that can protect against it. It’s like a leg kick, a knee, or an elbow or choke. First they have to recognize it and then start to train it.
MMAyou.com: You might have answered my next question. Why do you think so few MMA guys utilize leg kicks well?
Kaman: Because they never went there. It’s just a whole different ball game. When you’ve never received a good leg kick and you don’t think it’s powerful... They grew up with boxing here so yeah they know a punch is a knockout. But if you’ve never had a knee or never had a leg kick or never had a good leg kick, it’s something different. So when you get hurt then you start protecting it.
They didn’t grow up with Thai-boxing like we in Europe. It’s like most come from boxing or wrestling. They don’t recognize it. First, they have to get hurt (both start laughing)
MMAyou.com: I figured you would be the authority on that. Is there anything you would like to say to our readers?
Kaman: I will come out with some online things for standup for MMA fighters. It’s like kickboxing… It’s like standup coaching or standup for MMA fighters and an online teaching kickboxing instructor course. MMAyou.com: Perfect. Thanks Rob. Is there anything else you would like to say?
Kaman: That they should pay the fighters better, that’s the only thing (both start laughing). Then the trainers also make more money (both laugh).
