Check out what former UFC fighter, EliteXC fighter, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu trainer to BJ Penn, Renato "Charuto" Verissimo has to say about what it will take for BJ to beat Sean Sherk and Georges St. Pierre, Verissimo's fight with Matt Hughes, and much more.
MMAyou.com: First of all Charuto, thanks for taking the time to speak to MMAyou.com.
Verissimo: Anything for MMAyou.com!
MMAyou.com: What are you up to these days? Any plans to return to MMA or BJJ competition?
Verissimo: I'm doing pretty good! I had a neck injury after my last fight, so I took some time off to heal and now I'm back teaching the classes at BJ's gym and open new affiliated schools. I'm trying to get back to some sort of shape and after I'll decide if I'm ready to compete again. I'm really thinking compete some gi tournament before fight MMA.
MMAyou.com: Tell us how you see the BJ versus Sherk fight going down.
Verissimo: I can see BJ taking him down and using everything that he trained for. It's gonna be tough but he's ready to be in that cage until the job is done.
MMAyou.com: Can Anderson Silva be beat at 185? If you fought him, what would be your strategy?
Verissimo: Everybody can be beat in MMA. He's a great fighter with a lot of tools that make him really dangerous anywhere in the fight. He's been in a really good run right now. He deserves it, that guy has been around for a while. I have the chance to talk to him and he's a cool guy, really humble and polite. Great for the sport and he's Brazilian, make him even better! Hahaha.. My strategy against Silva: flying arm bar from the Thai clinch. That will be cool, huh?!
MMAyou.com: If BJ goes to 170 and fights GSP again, what does BJ have to do to win?
Verissimo: He has to go there and do what he's been doing. Take him down and pound on the ground, breaking him down in a consistent pace. His top game is really good and he knows more about his conditioning and nutrition. He knows that he can throw hard for five rounds no problem... More confident.
MMAyou.com: In your fight against Hughes, how did he get out of that triangle? Could you have done something different when you had him in the triangle to finish him?
Verissimo: I think it was the Vaseline that UFC allow put in everybody's face before the fight! Hahaha! I don't know! The only thing I remember that was tight and he got out somehow. Who knows? That's the fun thing about fight! Unpredictable!
MMAyou.com: Who was your main BJJ teacher?
Verissimo: My senseis are; Andre Pederneiras , Marco Pederneiras, his brother, Joao Roque ,Trajano, Judo, Roberto Simoes, judo. Without them this couldn't happen...
MMAyou.com: Would you like to get back in the UFC? Is there anybody out there that you would like to fight?
Verissimo: I'm pretty happy fighting EliteXC. I don't know, that you have to ask Jay Dee (EliteXC executive). He is the one with the answer for that...
MMAyou.com: What was your most memorable BJJ match?
Verissimo: I think with Leozinho Vieira. We fought 2 times and the guy is the best one that I ever competed against. So technical. I miss those times..
MMAyou.com: Anything you would like to say to your fans?
Verissimo: Thanks for the great support and aloha! Don't count me out yet!
MMAyou.com: Thank you Charuto.
