This is part 3 of a 3 part interview.
For Part 1
For Part 2
MMAyou.com: You were getting a little defensive when talking about your submission skills, why's that?
Rutten: Because after so many years they STILL see me as a striker, many think like this: "Oh he lost in 1995 by a submission so he doesn't have a ground game". If they just check that after my last loss, which was to Ken Shamrock, I won my next eight fights by submission. Well one by decision, but that was because of my submission skills in that fight, and after that fight I submitted more people than I KO'd. They could see that they are wrong.
Like I mentioned before, when I roll with people they are freaking out and tell me that they never knew. So after having that wrong "view" about me now since 1995 I simply say something about it. Think about it, it's like people telling you that you are not smart because you didn't learn any submissions for 13 years, which can get pretty annoying right, I mean, after 13 years!? I only have to watch out because if I say that I can knock people out that's OK because I am a striker, but if I say that I can submit people, I am an ego maniac. Haha, it's a battle you can't win! MMAyou.com: Thanks Bas, I appreciate this man. It was nice talking to you.
Rutten: No problem man. Did you see that game? Did you see it already, Grand Theft Auto?
MMAyou.com: I didn't play the game yet. I hope by the end of the week I will play it but I did see the video, it's on Youtube (here's a link to the video: Editor's note: the link contains vulgar language and actions) and it is hilarious.
Rutten: It's freakin funny right?
MMAyou.com: The whole thing where youre like "some people try yoga, other people put neon under their car, whatever that is".
Rutten: (both of us laughing) HAHAHA. You take a circular saw, you hit him WITH THE WET PART OF THE F***ING ARM!
MMAyou.com: That was awesome. (laughing). The other part where you're like, I don't take any s**t from a man dressed like a woman. I was thinking, "Oh no, you're going to get so much stuff from support groups. They're not going to believe this."
Rutten: "SO I GRAB HIM BY THE F***ING HAIR." The reactions are great, right?
MMAyou.com: It's unreal. I expected you to say some crazy stuff but that was like, whew! Way overboard. The best part is that this is going to probably be the number one selling video game of all time.
Rutten: Yeah, they told me this man. I didn't send it to my mother (both of us laughing) but my wife goes "You're fu**ing insane. Don't tell the kids. You're a psycho." The best is where I say "I like the smell of burnt flesh" and I got the (making smelling noises). The smelling. Oh man it was so funny to do, I really liked doing the TV show thing.
MMAyou.com: The whole thing was so good. I was thinking "Man, the people at GTA probably think he is messing around but they don't know he's really this crazy".
Rutten: Oh no, that's what I said. When they said, "as violent as you can", they were in shock what I started doing. They said "oh no, this is too much".
MMAyou.com: And they're supposed to be the most extreme game ever and they tell you to calm it down.
Rutten: Oh yeah, that was the best. And you watch the fight scenes, I did all the motion captioning for the fight scenes also, all the fighting you see in the game is me doing it together with my friend Amir Perets, you know him. We worked for five days, 8 hours a day, the stuff I did for them, it's pretty freakin gnarly my man
MMAyou.com: Nice, well it looks like everything is going really smooth with you.
Rutten: Yeah, I am so happy. It's like I said, everyday I'm just, I'm really blessed. I'm really blessed right now.
MMAyou.com: Good man, well you deserve it.
Rutten: And you know it all happened when I stopped the drinking.
MMAyou.com: I agree with it totally. I heard you say that in another interview and I said "that's gotta be it." As soon as you said that I said "everything's probably cleared up for him and now he's going to do all this great stuff".
Rutten: I stopped about ten months ago, got really busy and thought that since I am going to be more on TV now, I might as well be a good example for kids and other people, so I gave it up. Gotta tell you, didn't miss it one day. I am way too much in control now. I do so many things, its like I can move mountains. Who knew right? Hahahaha.
MMAyou.com: Now everybody is going to know about you.
Rutten: You watch! I pitched an idea for a TV show that I think they're going to do. The infomercial is gonna come out now in about four weeks.
MMAyou.com: Nice. So I am going to be seeing you on TV selling the workout?
Rutten: Yup. The workout and the BAS Stand. The Body Action Stand.
MMAyou.com: I have no idea what that is. Did you come up with it or was that something they came up with?
No, they showed it to me but then I came in with a hangover over there, it was funny.
MMAyou.com: You came in with a hangover over there?
Rutten: Yeah. I came in to look at the product and I smelled like alcohol and I look at them, and these are the people from the Ionic Breeze, the Total Gym, and the Razor Scooter. So, I started laughing and I said "Listen, obviously you can smell that I was really banged up yesterday but let me sink this in, and then I'll give you a call tomorrow, and I am probably going to make some changes to this thing". So they say "Okay cool if you can do that". So I call them and say "You need to change this this this this this" and they were blown away. They were like "This is really good what you're doing".
So then they made the product and then they said "We need a workout" and I said "Well actually I got one." So I made a demonstration of it. I put it on a tape. I went into the gym for an hour, put something together, I cut it down and they said right away, "Yeah we want this. This is great".
MMAyou.com: Nice.
Rutten: Yes and now it's going be all sold man. They're going to have my own supplement line, everything. There's gonna be vitamins, like Bas vitamins. When they found out I am a chef cook from profession they wanted to do a cooking segment also with the stand. It's crazy how things suddenly can turn, right?
MMAyou.com: Nice. I can't put any of this in the interview right?
Rutten: No, yeah you can talk about the product because you know I cannot really say what it is. It's a punching device that you can punch knee and kick. You can put it wherever you want. You can put it up in your living room, in the garage, in your bedroom. As long as you got some sandbags, you can put it pretty much anywhere you want when you have a little space.
For people like me with my tendonitis, people with joint problems, there is no impact. That's the greatest thing. And you really gotta aim for your shots. You know as well as I do how many times in interviews I say a lot of people don't aim when they punch. This thing, you really gotta be forced to aim, it's really cool.
